Dopamine cult

One of my more fav original thinkers on X, @G_S_Bhogal, talked about “dopamine culture”:

  1. Dopamine Culture:
“Every kind of organized distraction tends to become more and more imbecile.”
    — Aldous Huxley

The delay between desire & gratification is shrinking. Pleasure is increasingly more instant & effortless. Everything is becoming a drug.

What will it do to us?

I definitely see this happening with the indie hacking scene on X:

It went from building cool sh*t in public, to MRR screenshots, to now clickbait, rage-baiting, endless drama and public spats/fights.

It’s made 10x worse and amplified by the recent algo changes. We’re definitely moving into dopamine culture territory now 🙈

And it SUCKS.

This isn’t what I signed up for. I just want to see others building cool products, tinker with new tech, geek out over it, sometimes share a laugh or two over a joke/meme just for fun, and support and encourage one another to keep shipping.

Simple.

I’m a simple man. That’s all I want. But X is nothing but simple now. In fact it’s starting to resemble lame high school spats and dumb drama. I don’t want drama. I got enough drama to deal with in my life, and I don’t need another firehose of it.

And I’m not the only one who feels the same. Hearing this same complaint echo throughout the my circles.

Most are fading away, or quitting X altogether.

I’m also starting to question why I bother…
