Australian Ash Barty has just won the women’s singles championship at the Australian Open Tennis. Unlike other matches during the tournament, Ash’s opponent Danielle Collins put up a mighty battle in the second set.

Danielle Collins got two early breaks of server in the second set, and it looked like the match would go to a third set. However, at 1-5, Barty staged an unbelievable comeback, winning the next four games to even up the score and force the set into a tiebreaker. The final score was 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).

I thought Ash Barty would concede on the second set and then go on to win in the third set. However, once she broke back on serve, she got her mojo back and was never headed from there. Ash Barty’s reaction to winning this match was an expression of her relief at throwing off the 44 years of expectation and disappointment since Australia’s last Australian Open winner, Christine O’Neil, in 1978.

I am not a huge fan of tennis, but Ash Barty is one player I do like to watch. She is unpretentious and gets on with the job. Some other tennis players could learn a bit from her.
