Creating IP

As I’ve been working on my story binder, one thing I keep thinking about is the subtle difference a mindset shift can make in the work I do. For example, I’m trying not to think of myself writing novels. Instead, I’m developing intellectual property. The novel is merely the first (and possibly only) example of that IP.

So, even though the first draft I just wrote is meant to be a standalone book, I want to make sure I retain the option to it becoming more. As I’m developing, drafting, and revising a story, I want to give that story enough depth that readers will think of it as its own universe where more adventures are happening even if I haven’t written them.

As with any complex endeavor, one never knows what will hit. And once something hits, be ready to collect bonus points.

@Winkletter that’s an interesting reframing. The form factor of a novel is limited, but IP can be anything based on that story - products and services, merch and NFTs.

@jasonleow You can even convince people to buy little sticks. Just call them Harry Potter’s magic wand. :)
