We often have takeaway dinner on Friday nights, but as this Friday is the start of a long weekend, we decided we would have our fish and chips takeaway for Thursday dinner.

With its origins in England, fish and chips is a popular hot dish consisting of fried fish in crispy batter, served with chips. Fish and chips are often considered Britain’s national dish and is a common takeaway food in the United Kingdom and numerous other Commonwealth nations, including Australia.

If you purchase fish and chips in England, then that is all you get. However, if you looked at the menu at an Australian fish and chip shop, you would see many menu options to add to your dining. These include the dim sim, a dumpling consisting of minced meat, cabbage, and seasoning, encased in a wrapper similar to that of a traditional dumpling; potato cakes, a thin slice of potato, dipped in batter and deep-fried; and seafood delicacies such as scallops.

In Victoria, the fish of choice is flake, which is the flesh of several species of shark, particularly the gummy shark. The great thing about flake is that it never has any bones in it.

So tonight for dinner, I am having a grilled flake, two scallops, two potato cakes and chips. Yum!
