Happy anniversary

It didn’t dawn on me until I received an email from my manager, who is out on medical leave, that today is my eight-year anniversary with my company. He was the only one who remembered.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been eight years since I entered the consulting world. It’s been a good ride for the most part. I’ve had good clients with only one instance in which I requested to leave.

It’s also been a year since I was promoted to director. The director role has not been all that surprising. It’s challenging to remain 75% billable while still serving as the primary account manager for a client. So far, I have managed it well, although I would be just as happy remaining a consultant without managerial responsibility.

I am patiently waiting to see when the magical new opportunity will present itself. For now, I have some loose ends to tie up and some items to resolve with my current client. I hope I can get back to working on my magical SQL query. For the last two days, I have been adding data from one spreadsheet to another to pair up over 290K records. I’m bug-eyed after that task.

8 years is a long time indeed. What’s the threshold to get some form of “long service award” in your company?

Sadly, that’s a construct of the past. I’m not aware of any rewards associated with a length of service. At this point, they don’t even acknowledge it. The only one who reached out was my manager, who has been out on medical leave for the past year.
