Party time?
tao • 15 May 2022 •
At the top of this post, next to the date, you will see a little “party emoji” 🎉
If you click it, some confetti will randomly explode on the screen and a cute puppy dies. Fun huh!
I admit that in my 390 days of writing, I have never seen this before, or perhaps I have but have just never clicked it? I am not sure if @jasonleow was planning to build in some sort of “reaction”, “clap” or “like” to allow the reader to send feedback to the writer? Or perhaps this is just a fun easter egg that never went anywhere?
I sometimes think I would like some way to give quick feedback, but the usual Facebook style likes or thumbs-up can be a little annoying or overused. As a writer, it would be nice to get some sort of metrics on the number of reads, or what people thought.
After all, we can enjoy reading a post without needing to leave a comment saying so.

@tao glad you found the easter egg after 390 days! No it wasn’t meant to be a reaction feature. It was simply just that - an easter egg, a little delight. talking about reactions, I should bump that up in priority.
LinkedIn now has “Celebrate, Support, Love, Insightful, and Curious” besides the usual Like. What do you think would make sense for Lifelog?
@jasonleow hehe - I wonder what hidden egg I will find next? 😊 I am not really sure about the “likes” thing. I guess it would be fairly easy to implement, but would it add any value? I suspect there are other features that are more important? I know Baz added them to 200WaD before it closed - did you or anyone else find them useful there? Maybe a simple counter of the number of times a post was read might be a good start, although you would have to filter out the web crawlers and bots somehow.
Heh if I recall there’s 1 or 2 more eggs! Hope you find them!
Yeah not sure about value that’s why I asked. I am getting requests from time to time for some sort of silent interaction besides a comment though. A Like would be the easiest… yeah views might be tricky.
@jasonleow After further consideration, it’s possible the absense of a like button is a feature of LifeLog.
@Winkletter Oooh interesting why do you say that?
@jasonleow I’m probably influenced by the books I’m reading by Alfie Kohn. They focus on how rewards strengthen extrinsic motivation and undermine intrinsic motivation. Having a like button could lead to a less satisfying intrinsic experience. Users might start to equate likes with the value of their writing. There’s probably a balance that needs to be maintained between encouraging users through public rewards like streaks and the intrinsic value of writing a little bit each day about a goal.
@Winkletter Nice. I’ve always enjoyed your depth of perspective. Indeed, maybe I shouldn’t be too trigger happy about adding Likes. It might have unintended 2nd 3rd order effects on intrinsic experience of Lifelog as you mentioned
@tao Ah yes, a button that says, “I’ve read your post, but I don’t want to leave a comment that shows how badly I misunderstood you.”
