Sugar

I have put on a bit of podge recently, which I blame on lockdown. However, it has more to do with what I am eating than sitting around so much.

I have a sweet tooth, so I find it hard not to resist having something sweet after a meal. Now, if I could open a packet of biscuits and just eat one, then I would probably be ok. But I can’t stop at one, and so always eat too many. It is the same for chocolate or any other sweet treat, I have too much of it.

A moderate intake of refined sugar can be an acceptable part of a healthy diet. Experts define a moderate intake as about 10 per cent of the total energy intake per day. However, too much sugar can be bad for you, resulting in high blood pressure, weight gain, and diabetes. The weight gain is concerning me at the moment, as my weekly weigh-in is showing an upward trend.

I don’t need to avoid sugar altogether. Fruit, vegetables and dairy foods all contain naturally occurring sugars and are also sources of fibre, vitamins and minerals, such as calcium. However, I need to avoid overconsuming added sugars. So, it’s time to ditch the biscuits and chocolate.

I have that sweet tooth too. A meal doesn’t feel complete till dessert is served haha.

Try leaving healthier alternatives lying around at home! It’ll be easier to ease off, while still having something sweet to end off the palatte :)
