10-second penalty

Australian Grand Prix driver Oscar Piastri had a tense and frustrating weekend at the 2025 British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Despite leading much of the race in tough wet conditions, he was given a 10-second penalty that ultimately cost him the win.
Piastri overtook Max Verstappen to take the lead on Lap 8 and kept control through several safety car periods. During a restart on lap 21, he was penalised for braking erratically, decelerating from 218 km/h to 52 km/h with heavy brake pressure, prompting Verstappen to avoid a collision. This action was a violation of FIA Sporting Regulations, which ban unpredictable braking behind the safety car. As a result, stewards issued a 10-second penalty that Piastri served during his final pit stop on lap 43. This allowed his teammate, Lando Norris, to seize the lead and ultimately win the race.
Piastri looked upset and told the team radio, “I’ll get myself banned for the year if I say anything.” He questioned the fairness of the stewards, noting he had braked the same way during earlier restarts without issues. Despite the setback, Piastri remains at the top of the Drivers’ Championship, now just eight points ahead of Norris, and McLaren still leads the Constructors’ standings comfortably.
