A cold afternoon at the footy

It was one of those cold Melbourne afternoons when the wind seemed to cut straight through every layer of clothing. The Melbourne Cricket Ground felt grey and unforgiving, and so did the football. As a Richmond supporter, I always feel a surge of hope when I walk through the gates, no matter where my team sits on the ladder. But by the final siren, that hope had long since disappeared.
The Melbourne Demons were simply too strong. They moved the ball with confidence, won the contests, and punished Richmond’s mistakes. Every Tigers turnover seemed to end in another Melbourne goal, while our opportunities were few and far between. Sitting near the bottom of the ladder, the heavy defeat felt like another reminder of how far the club has fallen from the glory years of recent memory.
Around me, Tigers supporters sat quietly, wrapped in scarves and beanies, seeking positives where they could. There were brief flashes of effort from the younger players, but they offered little comfort on a difficult day. Watching your team lose is part of being a football supporter, yet repeated losses can be demoralising, especially when the gap between your side and the opposition seems so wide. Still, loyalty is what being a Richmond supporter is all about. Better days will come. For now, we endure the cold, the losses, and the hope that next week might be different.
