A new favourite

One of the highlights of my Saturday bike ride is the stop afterwards at Akimbo Bread in Northcote. It has become a bit of a ritual. No matter what route I’ve ridden or how many kilometres I’ve clocked up, I always end up standing outside the bakery, joining the queue that inevitably spills out the door. Judging by the number of people willing to wait, I’m clearly not the only one who appreciates what they bake.

My standard order rarely changes. A country sourdough loaf and a cardamom bun to share with my wife over morning coffee. It is a simple pleasure and has become part of our weekend routine. Last weekend, I decided to try one of their baguettes. It was crisp, golden, and everything a baguette should be. The crackle of the crust and the soft interior won me over immediately. It was one of the best baguettes I have ever had. So when I arrived this morning and finally reached the front of the queue, my usual order went out the window. This week there was no country loaf. Instead, I bought two baguettes. Sometimes even the most established traditions need to make way for a new favourite.
