The next-generation Mazda MX-5 is anticipated to debut around 2027, representing more of an evolutionary update than a revolutionary redesign. Mazda intends to equip the new MX-5 with a bigger 2.5-litre SkyActiv-Z engine. Although the engine’s displacement increases, its power output will stay comparable to the current 2.0-litre version, thanks to new emissions regulations. The emphasis is on enhancing fuel efficiency and promoting cleaner combustion, utilising a new “lambda one” cycle.

“Lambda one” signifies a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio, representing the optimal mix where all fuel is combusted using all available oxygen. Mazda’s breakthrough is in achieving ultra-lean burn combustion over a broad RPM range—from low to high engine speeds—while maintaining this ideal lambda level. This enhances thermal efficiency, translating to more energy from fuel being converted into useful power rather than lost as heat. The advantages include reduced emissions, improved fuel economy, and robust performance, all while complying with stricter environmental regulations.

Mazda plans to make the next MX-5 lighter and more compact, aiming for a weight under one tonne and a length below four metres. This would make it the lightest MX-5 to date, boosting agility and driving enjoyment. The design team remains dedicated to maintaining the MX-5’s essential identity—lightweight, rear-wheel drive, and straightforward joy. It is expected to keep proportions similar to the current ND generation.
