Bin night

Monday night is bin night, where I have to ensure I put the bins out on the nature strip before I go to bed so the council can empty them early in the morning.

We have three bins:

  • One 120-litre bin for household rubbish
  • One 240-litre bin for recycling
  • One 240-litre bin for garden waste

The household rubbish bin is intentionally smaller than the recycling and garden bins to discourage residents from throwing all their rubbish in it. While the household bin is emptied every week, the recycling and garden bins are only emptied every other week.

The council now allows us to add food scraps and other organic waste into the garden bin to put less in the household rubbish. This has been a success, as it has reduced waste going to landfill significantly.

Despite my best intentions, I sometimes bring out the wrong bin, only to realise later that I could have done better. This can be frustrating, as I have to wait another week before my waste can be collected. It’s incredibly annoying when I notice that my neighbours have successfully put out the correct bin, making me feel embarrassed and forgetful. Nevertheless, we are fortunate to have such a reliable service in our neighbourhood.
