In celebration of her 30th birthday, my daughter did a 30-kilometre run. She is preparing for a marathon later this year and thought a challenging 30-kilometre run on her birthday would be good training. At my age, I’m too old to organise a run as long as my age. These days, I’m lucky to go for any run, let alone one that matches my age in kilometres.

We met up with her at the 10-kilometre mark, and my wife, youngest daughter and her boyfriend joined my daughter on the run. She had set an incredible pace, completing the first 10 kilometres in an hour and feeling great. I set off for a coffee as they disappeared up the running path. What else was I to do, as I could join the run because of a knee injury?

After just over an hour, they returned to the starting point, completing 20 kilometres. My wife and youngest daughter stopped at this point, but my youngest daughter’s boyfriend kept running. Although my eldest daughter felt a little fatigued, she was confident she would complete the run without issues. She returned an hour later after running 30 kilometres on her birthday. Her legs were tired, but she was pleased about her achievement. It was now time for lunch.
