Clout-chasing as marketing

I tweeted today about how clout-chasing as a marketing tactic is one of the most annoying things about social media entrepreneurship.
What I mean by clout-chasing as marketing is the insistence on gaining social influence by constantly pushing to be “the guy with the right opinions” on every topic-of-the-day.
Dan Koe had a great YouTube short about how we need to normalize not having an opinion on things we don’t understand.
Clout-chasing marketers essentially sell their products/services by constantly putting their (digital) face in front of people with their loud and frequently wrong opinion on the topic-of-the-day. They can’t not have an opinion on something in their field (or, frequently, outside of their field) because their entire sales strategy relies on appearing to be the expert on everything.
Being humble and quiet on matters you don’t understand until you’ve done the work and research to understand the nuances is a far better tactic in cementing true expertise. Market yourself as the quiet and humble expert in your specific field and strive to become 1% more knowledgeable in your fields of interest every day.

This is now the second reference I’ve seen to this Dan Koe. Something is telling me to pay attention to him.

100%. The whole building an audience movement had made the indie hacking, building in public scene pretty annoying. Worst are those who have no qualms leveraging on outrage to get a few clicks and followers 😠
