Craftsman Mindset

You need to get good in order to get good things in your working life, and the craftsman mindset is focused on achieving exactly that goal. - Cal Newport (from his book So Good They Can’t Ignore You).

This quote resurfaced in my Readwise today, and even though the book is not about entrepreneurship -at least not strictly speaking- the quote lends itself really well to how important is to cultivate that craftsman mindset.

The craftsman mindset is opposite to the “passion” mindset. It’s all about adopting a pragmatic, skill-focused approach to work. It’s about emphasizing on continuous improvement, on mastery.

The paths that unveil themselves from engaging and this practice are the ones that lead to fulfilment and meaning.

It sounds very counter intuitive, but I have personally -without knowing about this before- found it to be true in some areas of my life where I have become skillful.

In order to stop relying on a single source of income I must adopt the craftsman mindset to hone the skills that can allow me to harness other sources of income and therefore achieve the goal of being financially independent.

I always thought passion was sufficient. But after a few years going hard at indie hacking, I realised that alone isn’t enough. Building skill and getting more practice feels way more fulfilling and also concrete.

It can be hard to come to that realisation, but I believe it is right.
