Fairfield to the city

Since I’ve started using the suburban train more often, travelling from Fairfield to the CBD has become a calming routine. The journey begins quietly, with the platform filled with familiar commuters, some holding takeaway coffee, others still groggy from sleep. When the train arrives, there’s a gentle shuffle aboard, a shared understanding of this daily comfort. As we head south, the scenery shifts from green suburban streets to more crowded terraces and graffiti-covered walls. The Yarra briefly appears, catching the morning sunlight, before the train passes Clifton Hill. Each stop brings a slight shift in atmosphere: more passengers, conversations starting, and a growing sense of anticipation.

Inside the carriage, life unfolds in small moments. Someone scrolls through news headlines, another listens to music, and a pair of men quietly discuss the day ahead. It’s a cross-section of the city before it fully wakes. By the time we approach Richmond, the skyline begins to dominate, with glass towers reflecting the early sun. The train slows, then slips into the heart of it all. Stepping onto the platform, the calm dissolves into the city’s pulse, a transition completed in just a handful of stops.
