Title: ‘Just Do It’

Pourriez-vous m’aider à écrire une courte phrase en français ?

‘Could you help me write a short sentence in French?’

Je voudrais écrire une phrase courte.

I would like to write a short sentence.

What I understand about French so far is the subject (I, you, we, etc), the words and the sentence structure. But I don’t have a good understanding of the following:

  • conditional verbs
  • objects
  • infinitive phrase
  • prepositional phrase
  • noun phrase

Grammar concepts are boring to me and make language learning a nuisance. I don’t think I need to learn them to learn the language, since I have a good command on them in English without knowing what they are (maybe I don’t, because what is this sentence?)

Comments

This matches what I’m reading about language acquisition. Studying grammar rules teaches you how to monitor your use of language, not produce it.

Also, how you feel about learning affects what you learn. If you’re bored, you’re probably going to struggle. The trick is to find something in the language you actually want to understand. Bon courage!

What @Winkletter shared is what I agree with. I actually lack proper knowledge of English grammar, but I do fine with writing (for the most part). The theory might help me understand where I go wrong when I go wrong, but starting with grammar rules feels like a distraction from the desire to express myself or to learn about something in a new language.
