Grand Final week has something special about it, even when Richmond isn’t involved. For a footy supporter, it feels less like it’s about your own team and more like a celebration of the Australian game itself. Melbourne embraces the occasion, and with a public holiday on Friday, I could even head into the city for the Grand Final parade if I’m in the mood.

But Saturday is what really counts. Grand Final day has its own rituals and atmosphere, whoever is playing. This year, my daughter’s partner has invited me over to watch the game, which sounds like the perfect way to spend the day. There’ll be footy pies with plenty of sauce, a few drinks, plenty of opinions and, I’m sure, increasingly loud commentary as the afternoon unfolds.

Without Richmond playing, I can watch with a little less anxiety than usual. There’s no emotional rollercoaster tied to every kick, mark or umpiring decision. Instead, I can simply enjoy what should be a raucous afternoon of football.
That’s the beauty of Grand Final day. Your team doesn’t have to be there for it to feel important. Sometimes, it’s enough to enjoy the game, the company and the occasion.
