From travel agent to trip planner

Planning an overseas trip today is far easier and, in many ways, far more enjoyable than it was forty years ago. I still remember organising my first overseas adventure to Europe. Back then, the process relied heavily on a travel agent. Flights, accommodation, rail passes and tours all had to be booked through someone with access to information ordinary travellers simply could not obtain on their own. Brochures were collected, phone calls were made, and decisions often relied on others’ recommendations.

Today, the internet has completely transformed the travel experience. With a few clicks, I can compare hundreds of flights, read hotel reviews, explore destinations through videos and maps, and build an itinerary tailored to my interests. Websites and apps allow me to book everything from airport transfers to day tours without leaving home. What I enjoy most is that the planning itself has become part of the holiday. My wife is heading off on a trip to India next month, and though I am not going with her, I am enjoying helping her plan the trip. I can spend hours researching places to visit, finding hidden gems, comparing accommodation options and imagining what each day of the trip might look like. The anticipation starts long before any plane is boarded, even if I am not going.
