In-flight Wi-Fi

At the turn of the century, I remember how attentive airline staff were about ensuring we powered down our mobile phones before departing from the terminal. We were reminded not to turn them back on until we arrived at our destination’s terminal. I consistently made it a point to turn off my phone, yet I frequently pondered how many other passengers adhered to this guideline. I am sure there were still many phones left on.

Though passengers are still required to turn their phones to flight mode, the availability of in-flight Wi-Fi has made flying a little less boring. I am on a flight to Brisbane and have connected ot the in-flight Wi-Fi, and I am doing my writing while I fly. This may be the first flight I have made in-flight Wi-Fi work, and the great thing is that the Wi-Fi is free.

As I plan my trip to Europe later this year, I hope that the latest improvements in in-flight Wi-Fi will grant me internet access throughout my entire 20-hour flight. I understand that this is a first-world issue, but staying connected during flights is incredibly helpful, and it has finally become commonplace. I’m quite pleased with this.

Tony Robbins has a great story about the first flight he took where WiFi was available. They announced that it would be turned on, and everyone was cheering as they finally got internet access. After a short period, it crashed out, and everyone went from ecstatic to super pissed off. He was shocked to see how people could be so demanding and get used to something so fast.
