I’m continuing my experiment today working with ChatGPT and Stable Diffusion for game design. Can I make a daily roleplaying game that would be fun and engaging, while not requiring too much time or knowledge of game mechanics?

I want anyone to be able to drop into the game on any given day and complete the day’s quest in 5 to 15 minutes.

So far the visual assets are working. It didn’t take too much work to set up a pipeline. I have Stable Diffusion spitting out isometric hex tiles based on a simple 3D outline of a single tile. These can be dropped into an image editor like Krita or Photoshop where I use the same transparency mask to remove the background. The resulting image can be uploaded to Canva to create the grids of hexagon tiles.

The game design process has also been going great, working with ChatGPT. It really does feel like I have a conversation partner. Most of the ideas are mine, but as I describe them to ChatGPT it’s able to restate my ideas and fill in some details.

The overall theme is an isekai fantasy setting where the player transmigrates to a world of swords and sorcery. The player can choose to be summoned by a kingdom, reincarnated into a family, or transferred by a god. Each branch has a different tutorial level which also serves as a character creation stage where they move around and complete two of three possible actions that develop their character.

  • Summoned by a Kingdom, Starts in Royal Court
    • Wealth from Treasury (coins and goods)
    • Magical Weapon from Armory (randomized from a table)
    • Hero Status (choose an affinity from a list, weapons or elements)
  • Reincarnated into a Family, Starts in Home Town
    • Experience from Training (combat and magic)
    • Special Family Trait (randomized from a table)
    • Noble Status (choose a title from a list, noble or priestly title)
  • Transferred by a God, Starts in Heavenly Realm
    • Base Stat Boost (body and mind)
    • Special Ability from Blessing (randomized from a table)
    • Saint Status (choose a god from a list, miracles that mess with game mechanics)

From there they drop into the daily quests where they get loot, experience, and stat boosts which help them level up from an F-rank adventurer to A-rank and beyond.

Given the complexity to set this up, this will likely be one of my many projects pushed indefinitely onto the back burner, but so far I’m having fun slinging ideas back and forth with my AI buddy.
