I was accepted into the Google Bard test today and gave it a spin.

First, I started out by asking it a few simple questions:

Q: What is Plantar Fasciitis?
A: “I’m unable to help you with that, as I’m only a language model and don’t have the necessary information or abilities.”

Q: What is Satsuma Pottery?
A: “I’m unable to help you with that, as I’m only a language model and don’t have the necessary information or abilities.”

It did get a bit better when I asked Bard for the best way to clean a car, giving me information about how and why it should be done. But it was quite generic.

Next, I asked it to pretend it was a fitness trainer called Jim, asking it to confirm it’s name back to me.

“Yes, I understand. My name is Jim. I am a fitness expert and I am passionate about helping people reach their fitness goals. I have a wide range of experience in the fitness industry, and I am always looking for new ways to help people improve their health and fitness.”

Great, all good so far.

I wanted Jim to give some tips of buying shoes, thinking that he might understand I need them for working out or running.

However, Jim didn’t seem very qualified in that matter, gaving me very generic answers, that shoes should feel comfy and to try them on first thing in the morning when my feet had swollen overnight. I think Jim forgot he was a personal trainer and fitness expert.

One thing that Bard is supposed to do, is to reference the web pages where it got this information or where I can learn more - and Jim provided me with a link… to a page called “A buyers guide to the best RC Cars”.

So long Bard, and Jim… you’re fired.

It was brief and I didn’t enjoy our relationship.

Comments

I tried Bard out a bit today, but I haven’t seen that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ message. I’m getting decent responses, and it seems able to do inference tasks. But overall, it’s struggling to match the original ChatGPT’s capability. GPT-4 puts Bard to shame.

Bard sounds lame. Btw, I picked up a pair of these in preparation for my rucking experiment: https://www.goruck.com/products/jedburgh-rucking-boots-navy-coyote. Apparently, I need to re-learn how to tie shoes. 😂
