Jobs

My son has been applying for jobs recently, submitting his CV and cover letter for lots of different roles. Out of around 50 that he has applied for, he has only heard back from a handful that he wasn’t successful. The majority just drop into a black hole and you hear nothing, even for jobs in shops.

Gone are the days when you could walk into an employment agency and pick up a job washing up or packing boxes in a factory for a few pounds an hour. I used to do that all the time, never staying in a role for more than a few weeks at a time, as needed.

Now we have hit summer and all of the students will have finished school or come back from Uni, he will be up against them for jobs too. They might be more preferable to hire as they will be younger, less worried about doing a lower paid job and only see it as a temporary thing. My sons age might put employers off, now they have to legally pay him more per hour than a school-leaver.

Also, he still doesn’t have any idea what he would like to do for a career. Probably something that involves Photoshop, but people with those skills are probably ten-a-penny these days, especially if you factor in those living in cheaper countries, doing work online.

Perhaps he needs to go back into education or training? But knowing what to learn would be the hardest decision.

I also wish he had a little more entrepreneurial spirit and could start something on his own. He is too negative though and won’t give things a chance unless he knows they will work.

Happy to give a second set of eyes to the resume and CV and see if anything jumps out that could be modified to get more attention from recruiters/hiring managers.
