Not so busy

Most days, after work hours vanish quickly in a whirlwind of activities. I get home, walk Louie and Otis, think about dinner, handle whatever chores need doing, and work through the typical list of tasks. Usually, I barely have time to consider what to do next because something always requires my attention. But today was different. I arrived home around four, took the dogs out, and suddenly realized there was nothing else demanding my focus. No urgent tasks, no long list to complete, and no specific place I needed to be. Strangely, instead of feeling free, I felt a bit lost.

I’m so used to scheduling my afternoons around tasks that even an empty period can feel unsettling. My initial reaction is often to seek out something productive, as if idleness isn’t acceptable. However, I’ve come to realise this might be an important insight, an empty afternoon doesn’t need to be filled with activity, it can simply be enjoyed. The real challenge may not be finding something to do, but learning to be comfortable with doing nothing at all. Sometimes, a peaceful, quiet afternoon is exactly what I need to recharge and regain my perspective, allowing myself to simply exist without any demands or expectations.
