Pastry, coffee and conversation

One of the great pleasures of this year has been the regular catch-ups I’ve enjoyed with my daughters over breakfast. Both of my girls are true foodies, and with my oldest daughter having worked as a pastry chef, our outings inevitably centre on finding somewhere that serves exceptional pastries, good coffee, and a welcoming atmosphere. What started as an occasional breakfast has become a much-loved tradition. Every week, we set out to try a different café, bakery, or patisserie across Melbourne. We have sampled flaky croissants, delicate fruit tarts, rich pain au chocolat, and more creative pastries than I ever knew existed. Each venue has its own character, and part of the fun is comparing notes on what makes one stand out from another.
Of course, the food is only part of the appeal. The real joy comes from the time spent together. Over coffee and breakfast, we chat about work, family, travel plans, football, and whatever else is happening in our lives. Those conversations are relaxed, unhurried, and often filled with laughter. Melbourne is incredibly fortunate to have such a vibrant food culture, with world-class bakeries scattered throughout the city and suburbs. Exploring them with my daughters makes the experience even more special. The pastries may draw us in, but the company and connection keep me coming back.
