Something useful to offer

Volunteering has always appealed to me because it offers a simple way to give back to the community. My involvement in the L2P driver mentor program gives me a real sense of purpose, knowing that a few hours of my time can help a young person gain confidence, independence and an important life skill.
Today, though, I was reminded that volunteering can take many forms. Graham visited our home to help us better understand our heating and electricity needs. Graham is an engineer who volunteers his time through the local council, helping residents explore the possibilities of moving towards a fully electric home. His knowledge was impressive, particularly as we discussed options for heating our house more efficiently. What started as a conversation about keeping the house comfortable soon broadened to include solar panels, home batteries and electric cars. There’s a lot to consider, especially when comparing today’s costs with the potential benefits over many years.
I left the conversation with plenty to think about, and it reinforced how valuable it is when people are willing to share their professional knowledge simply to help others. Their generosity can make a real difference, and it reminded me that we all have something useful to offer.
