This Friday, Victorians will have a public holiday to celebrate the Australian Football League (AFL) Grand Final on Saturday. Usually, the public holiday lets the football fan attend the lunchtime Grand Final parade to cheer on the players playing in the Grand Final. But this year, we will have a holiday, but no parade, because the Grand Final is being played in Perth due to the lockdown.

This Friday is not the only public holiday we get for a sporting event. On the first day in November, we all get a day off for the Melbourne Cup, Australia’s most famous Thoroughbred horse race. Known as the race that stops a nation, it is the only horse race I will bet on.

Boxing Day is not necessarily a public holiday for a sporting event, but it always coincides with the first day of an annual Test Match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). So when all the festivities of Christmas day have come and gone, there is no better way to relax on Boxing day than to sit in the sun and watch Test Match cricket.

My team is not playing in the Grand Final this Saturday so I might have little interest in the game. But, I am sure going to enjoy the day off.
