Storage downsize

There’s a strangely satisfying feeling in downsizing storage, symbolising the final step in moving on from our old house in Ringwood North and settling into our new home. When we decided to sell, we first cleared out the house and garage, renting an 11-cubic-metre storage unit to sort through years of accumulated belongings. We discarded many items in a skip, but some remained, including our girls’ belongings, sentimental keepsakes, and other cherished items we wanted to keep but had no space for in the new house.

Eighteen months later, the storage has been gradually emptied, with the girls collecting most of their belongings and us taking care of some of our own items as well. Now, we are ready for the next step in this process: reducing the size of the storage unit from eleven cubic metres down to just four, which will significantly lower our monthly rent. The rule for this move is straightforward: if something won’t fit into the smaller space, it’s out. After so long without these items, it’s become quite clear that we probably didn’t need them in the first place, and letting go feels like a necessary part of moving forward.
