Having a pastry chef in the family complicates my efforts to maintain a healthy diet and shed some weight, especially since she often brings exquisite pastries. It’s tough for me to resist when faced with an assortment of sugary delights. This morning, while driving with friends, I successfully avoided the allure of an apple cake and a vanilla slice during our coffee stop at a bakery. I held my ground, refusing to jeopardise my diet on a cake from a quaint country bakery, no offence meant.

If I decide to deviate from my diet for a dessert, it must be something I can pair with tea without guilt. Today, when the pastry chef came around, we enjoyed Za’atar, tahini, peanut and milk chocolate croissants. I couldn’t resist the sweet treats on offer, and on this occasion, I gave in and felt no remorse. I can’t afford to relapse too many times, so I’ll have to be more diligent with my diet to compensate for this indulgence. However, when the pastry chef brings home delightful pastries, I can’t help but say yes, consequences be damned. After all, the best things in life are sweet.

Love it! If you’re going to take the hit, it better be the good stuff.
