The luxury of choice

There is something deeply reassuring about seeing years of careful planning come together. When my wife and I sat down to review the latest retirement projections from our financial adviser, we felt relief and satisfaction. The numbers confirmed what we had hoped: all the saving, investing, budgeting, and disciplined decisions over many years have put us in a position to retire comfortably.

What makes it feel even better is knowing that retirement is no longer a distant concept. It is coming into view, close enough to imagine without the fear that often accompanies such a major life change. We do not have to worry about drastically cutting our spending or giving up the activities and experiences we enjoy. The financial freedom we have worked towards is becoming a reality.

Perhaps the greatest gift is choice. As retirement approaches, we can decide whether to keep working, rather than being forced to. That distinction feels enormous. Work can continue if it provides purpose, enjoyment, or social connection, but the pressure is gone. After a lifetime of effort, responsibility, and careful planning, there is a wonderful sense of calm in knowing that when the time comes to step away from work, we will be more than ready.
