The race against sleep

I am sitting up in bed, the room lit only by the glow of my laptop as YouTube clips play one after another. It has become part of my evening routine, a chance to unwind after the day is done. Tonight, though, I have a challenge. My daily writing deadline is still looming, and I can feel sleep slowly gaining the upper hand. Every few minutes, my eyes grow heavier. A clip ends, another begins, and I find myself replaying the last thirty seconds because I wasn’t paying attention. My head dips forward, and I snap awake just in time. It is a familiar battle. The endless stream of videos seems determined to lull me to sleep.
Part of me is tempted to give in, set the laptop on the bedside table, and let sleep take over. But I know that if I do, I will wake tomorrow with a broken writing streak and a sense of disappointment. Years of daily writing have taught me that consistency matters more than inspiration. Tonight’s topic turns out to be obvious: the struggle to stay awake long enough to write about that struggle. Sometimes the story is right in front of me.
