Woodworking with AI

Where is this world heading? I saw a video where a woodworker used ChatGPT’s new image model to turn a sketch into an image of a planter they then added to a picture of their living room. I decided to try this out myself because I wanted to see what else it could do.

The results are a bit off (especially the build plans) but this gives me a taste of what’s to come.

  1. I start with a rough sketch.
  2. Have it render an example.
  3. Write instructions for building the planter.
  4. Even draw the build plans and create a cutlist.

What else? Maybe have it generate an SVG I can drop into a CNC machine? This needs a little more time to cook, but I can see a workflow here that goes from sketch to cut pieces that just need to be knocked together.

I’ve been struggling to get ChatGPT to create an editable SVG. I should be able to control the individual colors with Figma, but the SVG ChatGPT outputted behaves like a flat image.

@haideralmosawi I only use SVG in Inkscape, but it seems to import fine there. Most of the time, though, I import a PNG and use trace bitmap.

I’m not sure what the Figma equivalent to trace bitmap is, but maybe there’s a way to do it. I’ll look into it again soon, but I need a break from feeling like I’m hitting my head against a wall. 😄

If nothing else works, Inkscape’s trace bitmap works with a bit of practice.

I’ll make a note of that. Thanks!
