Work experience

I’ve had a young lad join my team this week for work experience, and it’s been a quiet reminder of how much there is to learn, even in the most routine parts of a working day. He arrived on Monday with a mix of eagerness and uncertainty, keen to impress but not quite sure where to start. It didn’t take long for him to find his footing, though.

There’s something refreshing about seeing the workplace through fresh eyes. Tasks that have long since become second nature to me seemed new and interesting to him, and his simple yet thoughtful questions made me pause and reflect on why I do things the way I do. It’s easy to forget that not everyone speaks the same shorthand or understands the same processes.

Over the week, he’s grown in confidence, stepping in to help where he can and showing a genuine willingness to learn. The team has taken him under their wing, offering guidance, a bit of humour, and the occasional gentle correction. It’s been a good experience all around, hopefully valuable for him, and a timely reminder for me of the importance of patience, mentoring, and giving someone their start.
