Working late

It’s not unusual for me to work late on network maintenance tasks, a crucial aspect of our IT operations. This evening is one of those occasions. Our service provider needs to update our firewall devices at multiple locations and has scheduled the change for 6:00 p.m. One of their technicians is offshore, so that they will work during their regular hours. I shouldn’t complain, though, as I don’t often have to work outside of regular hours.

I have been blessed that most of my jobs have been regular day jobs, allowing me to avoid working weekends for many years. My daughter, who has worked in hospitality, often complained about not having her weekends to herself. Now that she works in an office, she loves not dealing with irregular hours.

If I’m fortunate, the changes won’t take too long, and I’ll be heading home within an hour. I’m hopeful for a smooth process. However, if there are any issues, it could turn into a late night. If things go wrong, we must keep working until we resolve the problem or revert to the previous state. The staff will be unhappy if they cannot access the internet in the morning, and I don’t want to face their frustration.
