Writing a Book

phaidenbauer • 24 Sept 2024 •
Those who know me for longer know I always wanted (want) to write a novel. It’s been a dream for years, and I’ve got several ideas (sometimes headlines, sometimes short notes to activate certain memories of my childhood, as some ideas are ancient) in Ulysses.
But instead of writing, I recently bought another book on writing a book by Thomas Brezina (one of my childhood heroes). And a digital course (via Patreon) of a recently favourite author. There is a saying that buying books and reading books are two different hobbies, and I strongly agree with that.
I wonder when I will find (or create) the motivation to finally start writing that novel. For now, I’m thinking about buying a course on how to become a successful Twitch streamer. But that’s something for a different post.

What is the motivation behind writing a novel for you? Why do you want to do it?

@phaidenbauer Been musing over an idea of building a tool to help people write their first book. What do you think will help you get started and sustain?
Also, +1 what Brandon asked… why a novel?

@haideralmosawi It probably would make sense to try out some form of short fiction, I guess. We’ll see.
@therealbrandonwilson & @jasonleow I’m not even sure myself why I would want to write one. I just have a few ideas that feel like they need to be fleshed out into a novel.
@jasonleow Something that stops people from procrastinating 🙈. I think the only thing holding me back from writing that novel is writing it. It’s some strange anxiety I have that doesn’t really make sense, to be honest.

@phaidenbauer Fascinating but tough problem to solve and build a tool for… interesting! 🤔

@jasonleow Yes. It basically comes down to just do it, but the fear of failing is big. Though you already failed if you didn’t even start.

I HIGHLY recommend writing crap every day, even if it makes no sense: Two brothers walking in the woods and one of them turns into a zombie while chewing a piece of gum. What gets in the way is the intimidation to write a great story. The great story will come when you let loose and are able to write, experiment, and have fun!
Good luck!
