1000 subscribers on Substack

Hit 1000 subscribers on my Substack newsletter!

Ain’t much, and took about three years since Nov 2022, but it’s honest, steady progress of just publishing every Saturday without fail.

Some learnings, thoughts:

  • Slow and steady climb comes from weekly posting without fail for almost three years.
  • What’s surprising was how 73% of subscribers came from “Other Substack network”? It seems to be a catch-all category for subs acquired from Substack’s own internal ecosystem but not through the mobile app or from recommendations from other accounts. Maybe from Notes, comments, organic browsing/discovery.
  • Most impressions, though, come from emails. It’s an email newsletter after all.
  • Referrals from other newsletters used to help with acquisition, but a lot less now. I’m not active much on Substack too.
  • Open rate is 26%. A far cry from the initial 40-50% back in the early days. But I guess such are newsletters.
  • I started using the audience to market my Carrd plugins, so at least getting some commercial incentive from it, potentially.

What’s next? Just gonna keep going as usual! It’s a beautiful by-product of my daily writing, requires minimal effort, and continues to grow slowly and steadily. That works well for my current schedule and bandwidth.

Onwards!

That is an impressive milestone. I think people connect with that open, sometimes vulnerable honesty in your posts. They see a fellow traveler who shares in their struggle (and sometimes joy).

Thanks @Winkletter! You pretty much summed it up how my newsletter works! 🙏

Congratulations! That is a key milestone. I know how hard it is to grow a subscriber list the old-fashioned way. You should be very proud. 👏

“Happen to catch it…” Guess I have to work on making those subject lines irresistible.
