Because it's there

Writer Harold V. Melchert reminds us that success is sweeter when you savor the path:

“Live your life each day as you would climb a mountain. An occasional glance toward the summit keeps the goal in mind, but many beautiful scenes are to be observed from each new vantage point. Climb slowly, steadily, enjoying each passing moment; and the view from the summit will serve as a fitting climax for the journey.”

I like this. Can 100% relate, as I used to rock-climb, and also trekked the occasional mountain back in my younger days.

When climbing, sometimes we just want to complete the climb and reach the summit. We’re tired, thirsty, muscles burning up, sweaty, wet from rain, leeches creeping into our pants. So much so that we lose perspective why we’re even there.

It’s not just about the summit.
It’s the whole experience.

Of being outdoors. In nature. Being one with it or against it. Trying to live in the jungle. Pushing yourself. Doing something difficult and physically demanding. Being with friends. Going back to basics. No cellphone. Feeling free and wild.

“Because it’s there”, said George Mallory when asked why he wanted to climb Mount Everest.

The summit—the goal, $10k MRR, million dollar startup, whatever—just needs the occasional glance.

Other than that, it’s about savouring the way up every day, every task, every push.

Because it’s there.
It’s all there.
