Bingeing health content

For the past couple of days I’ve been watching a lot of YouTube videos on health, especially FAST weight loss (but in a healthy way). I was curious if there are ways to drop the weight (fat) quickly. It seems that intermittent fasting and keto are the way to go.

I’m very comfortable with fasting, having done a 36-hour fast with no real downsides. I thought I’d be lethargic and ACTED lethargic because I anticipated lethargy. But I think I can be energetic during fasts.

Keto MIGHT be a challenge, but I’m imagining myself enjoying the foods I CAN eat and so I’m not worrying about deprivation. If there’s no keto-friendly option to eat from, I guess I can fast for that meal and have my food elsewhere.

Being ok with fasting feels like a superpower!

I just need to couple it with patience because I’m eager to see results (and maybe reach my ideal outcome) faster than is realistic!

What is the fastest (but healthy!) way you know of to losing fat?

Comments

What’s the rush? All the ways I know to lose weight fast are not healthy for the body in the long term, and most lead to eventual weight regain and then some.

If you get to one meal a day, you might not even need to worry too much about keto cos the calorie restriction will be substantial in helping with weight loss. Might work well for you since you enjoy fasting!

But agree with Brandon, no hurry.

Second the comments here. I do one meal a day myself especially if I am able to get one high fat drink during the day. It takes a few days to get used to but it is feasible.

@therealbrandonwilson @jasonleow @keni I have a lot of weight to lose and so I was curious if there’s a way to make faster progress. But I’ll focus more on making progress than reaching my destination. 👍🏻

Keni, do you mean having a fat drink while fasting? I’m thinking of having a bulletproof coffee in the morning, but I heard conflicting opinions about that so I wasn’t sure whether to ditch the idea or not. Some say “jt has calories” while others say “what matters most is the insulin response”, but I’m not entirely sure what opinion to believe.

I have been into weight loss recently and ended up following 2 or 3 people who recommend intermittent fasting - Dr Michael Mosley (RIP), Prof Tim Spector and the nutrition team at ZOE. We haven’t followed that approach to the letter, but we have tried to eat earlier and then not snack afterwards until the morning. We have also removed as much ultra-processed foods from our diet as possible, stopped eating so many carb-rich meals (pasta and potatoes) and also stopped drinking alcohol. My wife and I are both (slowly) losing weight from doing this, along with regular exercise (running at least 5k 3 times a week, 10,000 steps a day ever day and a 10k+ walk on the weekend).

Interestingly, a book I am reading says that exercising to lose weight doesn’t really work as, based on scientific testing, the calorie burn you get from it only accounts for up to 10% of your daily total energy expended. However, there are other health benefits to staying fit.

The FAST 800 diet does look like a good way to lose weight quickly as you only do it for a few weeks, then going on to a 5:2 fasting diet - but only eating 800 calories a day would be hell.

@tao Thank you for all the info! I didn’t know Dr Mosley passed away! 😭 I’m definitely looking to remove processed foods from my diet and I’m trying to focus on the protein-rich meals I enjoy (steaks, grilled chicken, etc), as opposed to burgers and pizzas. Today was my first day back at the gym and I aim to get to 10k steps (did 7.5k today). It’s too hot in Kuwait to walk outside. 🥲

I was hoping I’d find a diet that can help me lose 10-12kg a month, but it seems that’s very unrealistic. I think I need to let go of this outcome fixation and just enjoy each day as it comes.

Agree with @tao re: exercise not being great for weight loss. Personal experience. I think it’s 80% diet, 20% exercise

@jasonleow I agree. It’s not the core of weight loss, but it can help. 😃👍🏻

@therealbrandonwilson I watched this a couple of days ago! Probably my favorite vid out of all the vids I watched! 😍

Hey Haider, I am mostly vegan now so I just take coconut cream with decaf chai when I am trying to suppress my hunger. I used to do heavy cream before and that was ultra yummy and makes me feel full quick. Bullet proof coffee maybe too much for me too now.
