Boring is a moat

How to get rich without getting lucky:

Find a SaaS with -

  1. Good profit
  2. Dated UI
  3. Lots of customer complaints

Build a modern, snappy alternative.
Laugh your way to the bank.

The key idea is to find such SaaS in the niches – the riches are in the niches! In areas like serious hobbies, technical specialties, utility services, runs on fax machines, paper forms. Or in boring industries. The more boring the better.

Just to throw some general ideas into the pot:

Goodreads
Wordpress .com
Joomla
Quickbooks
Craigslist
Salesforce
Lotus Notes
cPanel
Evernote
Skype
Zoho
Jira
Jotform
Archive .org

These are not the ones I researched extensively though, so the opportunity might still need more research. Truth is, the real opportunities require some digging into. And if people spent that much time researching it with the intention to build it, they won’t feel incentivized to shout out loud about it. Like how I’m not sharing mine.

So do your own fking homework.

But then again, mine’s a boring SaaS idea. You know you got a boring SaaS idea when you tell people about it and they go like, “Oh, interesting.” or “Nice.”

Boring is a moat. An intellectual/ego moat because the smart ones all want to build something that changes the world.

Thankfully, I like boring.

And I never miss an opportunity to bring up the classic wordpress.com vs. wordpress.org conundrum. 😜

@therealbrandonwilson Haha indeed. With the recent shenanigans wp might soon be dead and we won’t have that headache to deal with
