I’ve not been active much on X lately. No more daily posts. No more reply guy. No more engaging big accounts just because it’s good for growth and visibility. No more cracking my brain to get a 1M impressions super viral tweet.

A burnout break plus overseas vacay gave me some distance to truly see what the feed had become, with clarity.

I just scrolled through today, and most tweets were not about building in public, sharing cool hacks, learning something exciting. Most were engagement bait. A lot of lifestyle tweets. Or vanilla indie hacker content that you know was written as content to feed the hamster wheel. And way too many arguing about topics that will never get resolved or get the other side persuaded. Just plain petty arguments. It’s disappointing to see the state of the feed, how it went from fun geek hackerspace to gym bros locker room.

I get it. It’s the algo. It maximises what people stare at long enough. And we’re all hardwired to give attention to negative things more than positive. And in a long enough timeframe, if tweeting negativity, drama, bait and arguing gets the impressions, you will gravitate towards it, sooner or later. Like they say, you either die a hero or you live long enough to become a villain.

Stepping back, that’s what I was doing a lot more than I realised before my break.

To my horror now.

Tbf I miss the old indie hacker Twitter. But I doubt we’ll get that back.
And maybe I don’t need that back now… anyway.

More building, less yapping.

How many people on X do you reckon agree with this sentiment? I would imagine quite a few. This could be the message that helps you go viral. 🤣

F*ck the algo. Let’s get back to sharing things that excite us. Things that fuel our ambitions vs our fears. Genuine advice vs clickbaity, shallow soundbites.

Maybe I’m biased because I’ve never experienced the dopamine hit of some piece of content going viral, but I don’t get what the fuss is all about. If TwiX suddenly went offline, it wouldn’t affect me one bit, and that’s how I like it.
