Estate planning

Somehow, my schedule lined up two unpleasant tasks today: 1) estate planning, and 2) dentist appointment.
I guess dental appointments aren't that bad since I've been keeping up on my oral health. It's more just annoying having someone messing around in my mouth with instruments. Nevertheless, oral health is critical for whole body health.
I've been dragging my feet on estate planning for a long time. I know the responsible thing to do is get all the paperwork and ducks in line to ensure continuity if I am incapacitated or finally leave the earthly realm. It became top of mind after witnessing my mother's passing in January and another death recently. I helped my dad sort through all kinds of paperwork when his wife died, and it was an absolute mess. I told him that this was the reason for him to get his affairs in order, and he never did. It's not like he had much in the way of assets.
Even though I don't have kids, I do want to ensure anything that I have accumulated over my lifetime is passed on to the appropriate loved ones and not tied up in probate where some judge will decide.
