Focus first on expressing then impressing

Every piece we write is made up of both substance and style. The function and the form. The message we want to convey and how we convey it. But struggling to find the right words while writing is a recipe for inhibition and frustration. You don’t want to work about style while you’re expressing yourself. You don’t even want to worry about how your piece will be received by others.

Sure you can have a reader in mind to convey your message to, but getting too caught up with what the reader thinks or feels WHILE you’re writing can be intimidating.

Express yourself when writing, refine what you’ve written when editing.

Substance, then style.
