Freedom from

Why I want to be rich: Not to buy expensive things, but to buy freedom.

Freedom from working a job I hate, even if the salary is five figures.

Freedom from worrying about survival and feeding the family. And freedom to start thriving and living to our fullest potential.

Freedom from worrying if I can pay my medical bills when I’m old, or even, my elderly parents medical bills right now.

Freedom from being stuck in one city, country or location. Having the financial means to relocate to a place that gives me the best quality of life at the best returns on my money, is freedom.

Freedom from even in the little things, like not using a phone cover and not ever needing Apple Care to pay for a cracked phone screen.

Being rich is about buying freedom.

At a wealth seminar I attended recently, Andrew Cordle, founder of the Aspire Tour, told a story about interviewing Mike Tyson. Andrews likes to ask every guest to complete the phrase “Money is…” Instead of answering, Mike asked what other people said. Andrew said the most common answer he heard was “money is freedom.” Iron Mike started laughing his ass off, and it made Andrew nervous that he was going to explode. After he regained his composure, Mike said that if you believe money is freedom, you will forever be enslaved by it. Andrew said it was one of the most profound statements he’d ever heard. When someone asked how Andrew would answer, he replied, “Money is neutral.”

Hmmm good point but perhaps Mike are using the word freedom in slightly different ways. We are already free, fundamentally, as a birth right. Money opens up more optionality and ease in life (that feeling of being free to do whatever). So semantics.

And it’s always the rich who will tell you money doesn’t matter.
