GPT-4o

So OpenAI just launched GPT-4o.
“o” for omni. Or maybe “o-h no” because that what many builders of AI wrapper apps will be saying after today. As I watched the demos, I kept going “Damn!”. In an impressed sort of way. No, scratch that. In a mindblown sort of way is more accurate.
My top fav demos and moments:
- 2 GPT-4os interacting and singing with each other – Like Alexa vs Siri, but new. Imagine this is how telemarketing will be like in future. My AI talking to telemarketing AI, ad infinitum. Bye Bye telemarketing reps.
- Realtime translation with GPT-4o – Babel Fish is here. For fans of Hitchhiker’s guide To The Galaxy, you know. Bye bye Duolingo.
- It even gets dad jokes and sarcasm! No more using those as Turing Test for AIs…
- Varying tone of voice to suit the right mood – This feel way too human! And bye bye voice actors for audio books.
- Using it’s vision capabilities to
flirthelp – I feel like I just watched the 2024 remake of the movie Her (that one starring Joaquim Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson). - New desktop app incoming – Can imagine indie hackers building AI desktop apps to be panicking now!
One small step for AI, a giant massacre for indie AI wrapper apps.
But with every new wave of products killed also means new ideas and opportunities that become possible. What new opportunities are there?
- Realtime conversational AI apps, like for life coaching, therapy, education
- Audio versions of everything - story books, novels, comics. Get it to tell stories to your kid.
- Great features for travel - point cam at something and have it explain to you what that is, like an audio guide for a museum. Translate in realtime when ordering food, buying stuff.
- I can speak to every doc on my laptop using the desktop app - PDFs, word docs, excel, websites, everything.
What other ideas and opportunities are there for new products?

Wow. That looks amazing. Yes - a real life version of Her incoming!
I tried voice chat but I’m having a mental block. I’m so used to typing out long multi-paragraph prompts.

@drodol @tao @Winkletter Right!!! It’s like Her, made real. Now all OpenAI got to do is to commission ScarJo to do the voice acting for the AI…

I just tried the voice chat in my phone, and wow, it feels like I am talking to Her.
