Keto anniversary 2023

It’s my keto anniversary. I started keto on 2 Sept 2019, and it’s been 4 years.
A few thoughts about the journey:
- The diet changes all started from wanting to take charge of my health. I think I was heading towards being pre-diabetic or even diabetic, had all sorts of food cravings, eat too much junk food, ice cream and sugar. It was a train wreck in the making. I need to make big changes.
- I evolved from strict keto to keto to low carb then flipped hard core to carnivore, then back to low carb and now I’m in intuitive eating phase. It’s been a wild ride tbh. Loads of learning, even more unlearning.
- It’s an interesting phase now. Instead of following any one way of eating for many months or years based on certain food restrictions, I follow a diet based on intuition of what my body needs. If I feel hungrier and need more energy that day—like if I’m running a consulting workshop—I might eat more, and take more carbs. Even sweet treats. On lower output days, I stick to mostly keto-carnivore diet. On social occasions, I might go low carb then do some fasting the next day. It’s diet choices on a per meal basis. It’s definitely harder to maintain than simply following a set of rules, but it’s really what intuitive eating means – listening to what the body needs and consuming that.
- I think there’s an anti-fragility to this intuitive way of eating. There’s some benefits to the cyclical ketosis. I’m not limiting myself to any set of foods, and regularly expose to various foods to take in missing nutrients if my diet had been too narrow.
- Now that my consulting season is on hiatus for a few months, I might go back to being stricter, but it’s crazy how fast bad habits can build up. I can already feel the sugar cravings rearing its head regularly, but that intuitive feeling that I don’t need them is becoming obvious now that my energy needs are lower.
- I wonder if intuitive eating is the endgame? Who knows what will happen in the next year, when I write another anniversary note…

Yes I would go with that definition too. Still lots of room to develop that spidey sense of the right types and amounts of food on a day to day basis, and I still do make many mistakes, but good for learning and habit formation!

I’ve been a witness to much of the journey. It sounds like you’ve settled into an approach that works for you. My definition of intuitive eating is consuming the right amount of foods that provide optimal nutrition without having to think about it.
