keyboard.sg

Just snapped up keyboard.sg on impulse! I was watching it and looks like the previous owner forgot to renew it or gave it up.

What should I do with this?

Openly brainstorming here:

  • “Mechanical/custom keyboards” is a rising trend. In Singapore alone, I’ve seen 3-4 physical retails shops open during the pandemic. So there might be an opportunity here.
  • I enjoy using mechanical keyboards myself, got a few. Could be a hobby project based off my experience using them.
  • Something related to mechanical keyboards as that’s what the previous owner did - reselling mechanical keyboards.
  • The most common way to monetize this is SEO and affiliate marketing. Write some good helpful blog articles for local Singaporeans searching for mechanical/custom keyboards, e.g. “How to choose and buy parts for a custom keyboard”. Monetize with affiliate links to mechanical keyboard brands like Keychron and Razer, or to local keyboard shops.
  • Or an info product, like a listing or directory of local shops to buy from, or links to mech keyboard brands that ship to Singapore. Coupled with a KeyboardSG Telegram community for the engagement. The same playbook for my Keto List Singapore site.
  • Selling physical goods feels like too high barrier, but could dropshipping work? Linking up with good vendors on Alibaba/Aliexpress could be a future step.
  • Possible idea: Build software or micro-SaaS tools for custom keyboards?
  • Wild idea: Could be music-related site. Virtual piano lessons?

Any other ideas? 💡🤔

The lazy person in me says to scrape a list of the pages that are still in Google’s index and rebuild them as a thin affiliate page, with some simple blurb at the top and an automated list of Amazon/eBay affiliate products. Let the site sit and earn some affiliate earnings before Google detects it and kills it.
The other person in me suggests to build a proper info site about mechanical keyboards, with informational and affiliate articles, how to videos and content. Monetise it with ads, affiliate links or partner with a local shop with them paying for ad space on the site. All depends on how much time and effort you want to put into it and how passionate you could be about keyboards…
Alternatively, what do people in SG NOT get from a normal mechanical keyboard site? Is there a gap you can exploit?

Beware. This could be a slippery slope that might pull you into an expensive hobby if you dive too deep. Maybe, relaxing keyboard sounds?

@tao Yeah was thinking a combo of your 2nd and 3rd idea - info and articles about keyboards, but for Singapore audience. But not sure how high traffic it will get as it’s targeted at just local.

@Winkletter Haha you mean an expensive hobby of buying and using mechanical keyboards? I’m already knew deep in it haha… have 2 now, thinking of my 3rd one for some time already!

Perhaps you could start it as an informational site, then approach a local store where you could get access to the products to take your own images, video, product reviews - and get them to pay you to promote the store for them!

@tao that sounds like a lot of work, but I like the seed of the idea there! A bit like how Peter Askew approach vidalia onion farmers to start selling onions on the internet. Something analog and localized coupled with something digital and global. Have to start speaking to stores to sense what opportunities there might be!
