Manufactured urgency

I’m back to the ye olde grind today, and one of the things popping out at me is urgent requests.

Some requests are truly urgent. No advance warning, and poof! You’re on the hook to do something under the gun. In my opinion, these types of urgent issues should be few and far between. You should have systems and processes in place to alert you before an issue becomes a full-blown crisis.

I happen to believe the majority of “urgent” issues are manufactured urgency. What I mean is that certain actions (or non-action) led to an issue becoming urgent. For example, if you were given a month to do something and you procrastinate until the very last week, that is manufactured urgency.

I may have to start getting into the business of calling out manufactured urgency when I see it. These issues cause a lot of unnecessary stress and by and large can be avoided with proper systems and planning. Easier said than done, especially when you work at the behest of a client that plays fast and loose with most projects and tasks. Still, I’m going to do what I can in my little corner to help prevent manufactured urgency.
