Memory grief

We just returned from a trip to Melaka.

It’s crazy to see how things changed. Even more places where we loved and frequented are gone. Malls are empty, with vacant lots. Even huge institutions like hotels, now stand derelict. A huge 20-storey building, collecting mould, windows dark, ground uprooted by tree roots.

The few which stayed, are a dim shadow of their past.

Nothing’s the same anymore since the pandemic is over. And even less are surviving the years after, as support and funds run low.

It’s disheartening to witness.

Part of this is also grief of losing the places tied to beautiful memories. Beautiful memories of past trips. Of past lives and peak experiences. Of nostalgia and novelty.

If your memories are not tied to a physical place, then what can it be tied to?

That’s very unfortunate. 💔

How come this area was hit worse than other areas by the pandemic? Or are there other places with a similar story?

I don’t know about other parts of this country, cos I’m not a citizen. But can see less serious examples of it in Singapore. I think we’re still reeling from the economic aftermath, just not reported much
