New money-printing machine

Just ordered a refurbished space black 14" MacBook Pro – M3 Pro, 12‑Core CPU, 18‑Core GPU, 18GB RAM, 1TB SSD, ~US$2.2k.

It’s good value at that price point, and a pretty solid machine. Will probably even run some smaller LLMs fine. I’m excited. Needed a tech refresh for ages, and never got down to it till now. I’m starting to get error messages and lots of noise from my old Macbook Pro. Signs to change.

Stepping back, it’s amazing how this rectangle is the one tool that helps me generate all my indie revenue.

It has a hand in everything – coding, designing, marketing, communications. Even entertainment from time to time. And even more amazing how this new hunk of metal I bought for $2200 will pay itself many times over, and magically print all the future money from my future products, towards my $10k revenue/month goal.

This is a modern day Pandora’s Box. A powerful tool for bad, or good.

Hope it stays being net positive good for me, and for us all.

[UPDATE:] I tweeted about this and got some advice that I should increase the RAM instead. I listened and cancelled yesterday’s order and switched to 32GB but downgraded to M2 Pro chip instead – a refurbished space grey 14" MacBook Pro, M2 Pro Chip (12‑Core CPU, 19‑Core GPU), 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD. Costs S$3.5k (~US$2.4k) - that’s the max I can go on my budget to get more RAM. Maybe next time for the 128GB RAM, when I hit $10k/m revenue!

I got one of those models recently - amazing bits of kit. I just gave it straight to my son though, as he uses it for 8k video editing. He says it runs like a dream.

Nice. I’m thinking about asking my employer next year for an upgraded machine as I’m currently on M1 Pro, but it still fits my needs. Crazy how performant the M processors got over the Intel ones.

My favorite part of this is how you refer to it as a “rectangle.” 😆

@tao Yeah I heard the same about video editing. Intel MBPs would sound like a helicopter when I use Final Cut Pro. The apple silicon’s really blazingly fast!

@phaidenbauer Yeah really looking forward to being on apple silicon! My old MBP is so sluggish now I gotta wait 10-15min for it to start up and the hundreds of browser windows to open.

@therealbrandonwilson Haha isn’t it just amazing how much this rectangle can do for us

@knight I guess cos statistically speaking, it’s more likely that recent buyers will return a recent purchase, then older models being traded in or returned. M4 chip only on iPad for now right?

yeah ppl will return but Apple seldom release latest model to refurbished store , especially the Singapore store, unless new model coming soon, thats why I suspect macbook pro might be getting m4 soon

M4 is iPad Pro only currently. But I think we will see a M4 MB Line-up later this year. I think they might also be preparing to bring the M line to iPhones.
