Normal is abnormal

The older I get, the more I realise that ‘normal’ is just mass agreement on how to live a life you’ll regret.

Normal is the 9-5. Normal is the mortgage. Normal is waiting for weekends. Normal is dying with your music still in you. Abnormal is the only path worth taking.

Scott D. Clary

What’s normal is abnormal.
It’s normalised, not normal.

What’s normalised:

  • Sending kids to a high pressure cooker education system, and expecting that their mental health will be okay.
  • Spending your precious weekend in the same crazy crowded malls, going nuts, wishing you had fields to run on, mountains to climb, and rivers to swim in, and then feeling you need another weekend to rest it off.
  • Spending your precious hard-won money on a meal, but it costs an arm and leg because inflation and costs of living had spiralled out of control.
  • Entertainment means mindlessly scrolling at bedtime, hoping to fill up that empty void of having to repeat the same day over and over again.
  • Getting into massive debt to afford a concrete pigeonhole in the sky, only for the interests to ensure you have to pay it off for the next 30 years.
  • Needing to even work 4 jobs to feed a family, and it’s still barely enough.
  • Wanting to save for a rainy day or retirement but nothing to save with.

When I was younger, I saw all of these things as normal.

Now, it’s abnormal. It’s normalised to the point of numbness.

That’s why I can’t wait to get outta here.
